Massive clash as Juventus look for a potential treble, and Lazio search for their first piece of silverware since 2013.
On Wednesday the 17th May, Juventus and Lazio will face off in the Stadio Olimpico. This battle for the Italian domestic trophy is one of utmost importance for both squads.
Juventus are on route to win the trio of Serie A, Champions League and Coppa Italia. They find themselves top of the Italian league, and finalists in both the Champions League and the upcoming Coppa Italia.
Lazio, on the other hand, are looking to cap off a highly successful season with a trophy. They, as well as being finalist in this cup, are 4th in the Serie A in a Europa League qualification spot. Both teams want the silverware and the satisfaction that comes from winning it.
Road to the final – Juventus:
On the way to the final, Juventus faced a tough road. In the Round of 16, they played high-flying Atalanta. Goals from Paulo Dybala, Mario Mandzukic and Miralem Pjanic saw them eek out a 3-2 win in Turin.
In the next round, the quarter-finals, they played historical rivals AC Milan. In this tense affair they managed to get 2 goals, once again from Dybala and Pjanic, while the Rossoneri were only able to score once, courtesy of Carlos Bacca.
Now at the two-legged semi finals, they faced the goal scoring machine, Napoli. In the first leg in Turin, they managed to come back from 1-0 down to win 3-1, with one coming from the ex-Napoli man, Gonzalo Higuain.
One week later they travelled to Naples, where once again Higuain scored. They lost 3-2 here, but did enough to progress 5-4 on aggregate to reach Wednesday’s final.
Road to the final – Lazio:
In their first game in the Round of 16, Lazio faced Genoa. In this high-scoring match, goals from Filip Djordjevic, Wesley Hoedt, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Ciro Immobile allowed them to brush the Rossoblu aside with ease, 4-2.
Next up for Lazio was Inter, away from home. In this fixture, Lazio gained the lead early through Felipe Anderson, and a penalty from Lucas Biglia put them 2-0 up. Inter got one late on but Lazio managed to hold on and scrape through to the semi-finals with a 2-1 win.
In the two-legged semi-finals, Lazio faced bitter local rivals Roma. The first match was a strong one from Lazio, putting two past Roma, with Milinkovic-Savic and Immobile hitting the target.
Similarly to Juventus, Lazio lost the second game 3-2, but edged through on aggregate 4-3. They too find themselves as finalists, and will be battling it out with the Bianconeri to take the trophy home.
Players to watch:
MILINKOVIC-SAVIC has been immense for Lazio this campaign, particularly in the Coppa Italia. The Serbian has 3 goals and 1 assist in the competition thus far and has been a key player for Lazio in the midfield, being just as industrious in defence as attack.
PAULO DYBALA has carried Juventus in this Coppa Italia campaign. His 4 goals have helped Juventus progress through the stages of the competition and the Argentine’s overall play has helped link his team’s midfield and attack.
Analysis and Prediction:
While Juventus have been known to have a defence which has been difficult to break down, they’ve been leaky in this competition so far, and Lazio have shown a knack for scoring goals lately. This game is set up to be a fast-paced, high-scoring game.
As indicated by their results overall this season, I believe Juventus will edge out Lazio just about, as they have done twice this season in the league.
Prediction: Juventus 3-2 Lazio
