AC Milan’s summer spending: Chinese investment and a bright future

This year, AC Milan entered a new era, when Rossoneri Sport Investment Lux purchased a 99.9% stake in the club. This takeover offered hope to Milan’s many fans that Chinese investment would lead to a strong transfer window and future success, brought along by the additional funds available. Although it is early in the window, there are promising signs for the Milan club.

While last season AC Milan achieved 6th place and Europa League qualification, it wasn’t considered a successful season. It was universally agreed that reinforcements were needed should the club wish to challenge the best teams in the world. Evidently the club agreed, and 4 top players have already arrived at in Milan.

Defence

In defence, a particularly weak area for the club, Milan have recruited two highly regarded players. Firstly, Villarreal’s Mateo Musacchio was brought in for a fee of €18 Million. Musacchio is a central defender who has spent the majority of his career in Spain, slowly gaining a reputation for being a reliable option at the back. He is still only 26 years old, and will offer Milan the stability they’ve lacked for some time now.

In addtion, Wolfsburg’s Ricardo Rodriguez was signed. Again for a fee of €18 Million, the 24 year old made a name for himself as a solid full-back defensively and offensively. He has been linked to many clubs in recent times and Milan were the ones to win the race for his signature. This season for Wolfsburg he chipped in with 2 goals and 3 assists. Milan will be looking to him as an attacking outlet on the left to support their wingers. How quickly these players can adapt to the Serie A is yet to be seen, but Milan will be hoping it will be a comfortable transition.

Midfield

In midfield, Milan have made just one signing so far. Atalanta’s Franck Kessie arrived on a two-year loan with obligation to buy. The 20 year old Ivorian was key in bringing Atalanta to their highest ever Serie A finish. Now he will look to bring his well-rounded skill set to Milan. The midfielder contributed with 6 goals and 3 assists and will add some much needed steel to Milan’s squad.  The youngster will be desperate to prove he wasn’t a one season wonder, and Milan will be hoping he’ll keep improving for years to come. Milan will likely look for a partner for him in the midfield, with many names linked to the club recently.

Attack

Milan’s dysfunctional attack has caused them issues this season, and Carlos Bacca has failed to act as the talisman the club needed him to be in order be successful. In order to fix this misfiring attack, Milan have recruited André Silva from FC Porto for €38 Million. The 21 year old has had a breakthrough season in the Primeira Liga, scoring 16 goals. The Portuguese youngster still has many years to grow and will be trying to raise that goal tally further in Italy. Italy recently has become a hot spot for top strikers, with Edin Dzeko, Gonzalo Higuain, Andrea Belotti and Dries Mertens among other goal machines. Silva will look to join this prestigious list in his time at Milan.

Rumoured addtions

As well as these four top players being confirmed, many rumours circulate about Milan making further signings. Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian has reportedly been of interest, as well as Atalanta’s Andrea Conti in defence. In midfield, RB Leipzig’s Emil Forsberg has stated that Milan have an “interesting project” after having been linked. The midfielder had an incredible season for the German outfit with 8 goals and 19 assists. One can imagine he would fit in well alongside Franck Kessie. In attack, Keita Balde Diao of Lazio is of interest to Milan, as is high flying Belotti.

Milan have the spending power to make these signings. Now it is only a question of if they can all play together as a team. If these players can, Milan could be a formidable opponent in the season to come. Perhaps, with luck, they could push for the title even.
