Nemanja Matic swapped Chelsea for Manchester United this summer, after a successful three-year spell at Stamford Bridge.
The Serbian international won two Premier League titles during his spell with the blues. Despite finishing 10th place at the end of the 2015/16 campaign, overall Matic can look back upon his time at Chelsea as a success.
He’s ultimately been lured to Old Trafford to replace veteran and legendary midfielder Michael Carrick. Although Carrick remains at Manchester United, his best days are behind him, which is why Mourinho has called upon Matic to replace him.
Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera became midfield companions during Mourinho’s debut season at the Theatre of Dreams. However, Pogba’s attacking freedom was restricted due to United’s lack of a defensive midfielder to take care of defensive responsibilities.
Will Matic be the finishing piece of the jigsaw? Early signs this season look incredibly promising with Matic sitting in a deep role, to accommodate Herrera, Mata and most notably Pogba.
Matic’s experience in success will also be a valuable attribute to the squad assembled by Mourinho to guide Manchester United to glory. Their squad was once full of experienced Premier League winners, whereas now they are starting from scratch.
In fact, West Ham’s starting line-up boasted the same amount of Premier League titles as Manchester United’s line-up on Sunday. The red devils threw the chequebook at David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal to clinch silverware.
However, that sort of irrational approach failed to make an impact and contributed to United’s rapid downfall. It was inevitably going to take time to fill the void left by legendary leader Sir Alex Ferguson.
David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal crumbled under the mounting pressure of succeeding Manchester United’s master. Can Jose Mourinho taste success in arguably the toughest challenge of his managerial career?
He’s carefully approached transfers, despite spending large sums of money on Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba. His decisions have been measured, as he’s developed United’s youngsters to provide depth and shaped them into a major prospect for the Premier League title.
Jose Mourinho remains the “special one” and anyone who has doubted him will conclusively look foolish. He’s the tactical mastermind and success and glory is in his blood. Matic will provide the platform to erase United’s attacking woes and bring the Premier League title back to the Theatre of Dreams!
Manchester United Will Allow Nemanja Matic to Shine
Nemanja Matic holds the key to success for Manchester United and his impact was seriously undermined by the Chelsea faithful. He’s organized, efficient and brave in his defensive actions. He has a purpose in the team, which is possibly more important than any other member of the Manchester United squad.
He does the dirty work, just like Michael Carrick and Roy Keane were renowned for during the prime years of their careers. Matic fetches loose balls, throws his body in front of anything which can possibly be won and distributes the ball effectively to trigger dangerous and threatening attacking moves.
It’s mesmerizing to watch and unfortunate that Chelsea were unable to see the type of talent they had at their disposal. He’ll be sorely missed at Stamford Bridge this season and Manchester United will reap the rewards from Chelsea’s stupidity. Looking at the video clips above, it’s clear to see that the timing of Matic’s interceptions and challenges are pivotal.
Whereas, other midfielders throw themselves into challenges to be perceived as a heroic member of the team. Matic will measure his challenges perfectly to ensure that he has the best possible chance of coming away with possession. He’s also much quicker than he’s given credit for and his superior figure also strikes fear into the opponents’ mind.
Essentially, Matic will allow Pogba, Herrera, Mata, Mkhitaryan and Rashford the attacking freedom to exploit the opposition’s defence. He’s the type to take a back seat and sit in a limited defensive role to benefit the team going forward.
From our clips of Nemanja Matic’s attacking actions against Real Madrid, it is clear to see that he has great balance in both departments. He can provide a defensive barrier and threat but also supply attackers with opportunities. Whether it’s spreading the ball out to the flanks or playing a penetrative pass into a dangerous central area, Matic can do either.
Matic also replicates the qualities shown by Michael Carrick by bringing calm to the defence by breaking up play and distributing the ball into safe areas. Rather than playing ambitious passes into areas where the ball is in risk of being lost, he’ll discover a more simple option to allow the team to rediscover their shape.
He’s the engine in the midfield, who’ll get United ticking in both departments this season. Like his former midfield partner Kante, he’s a workhorse and his contribution brings calm and confidence to both defence and attack. It may be premature to make this type of remark but Matic could decide whether Manchester United win the Premier League title or not.
