A Review of Barcelona’s Summer Signings

Barcelona attempted to strengthen the squad in the last summer as they spent 122 million euro on six players.

Andre Gomes – From Valencia for 35 million Euros

The most expensive of Barcelona’s summer signings was André Gomes, who came for 35 million euros from Valencia, but the Spaniard failed to meet the expectations thus far. While getting plenty of minutes on the pitch his performance were unsatisfactory.

The lowest point of his season was getting booed at the Camp Nou when Barcelona won 2-1 against Leganes. Luis Enrique said André Gomes had only shown thirty percent of what he’s capable of and that he will prove to be a very useful addition to the squad in the future.

Samuel Umtiti – From Lyon for 25 Million Euros

Samuel Umtiti was the most valuable player of Barcelona’s summer signings. The transfer fee of 25 million euros was a bargain as the Frenchmen went on to have an exceptionally good first season.

He made the starting eleven 38 times this season and robbed Javier Mascherano of his starting spot after a couple of poor performances from the Argentinia.

Umtiti himself integrated comfortably into the team with flawless performances. He was always looking calm on the ball and put in very solid defensive work.

Denis Suarez – From Villarreal for 3.25 Million Euros

Due to a buy-back clause Barcelona were able to sign Denis Suárez for only 3.25 million euro after the former had an impressive season at Villarreal.

Now back in Catalonia, he was included in the starting eleven 15 times across all competitions. Expectations were high for him as Xavi Hernández claimed Denis Suárez is his natural heir at Barcelona. He hasn’t yet lived up to the expectations, however, he has displayed flashes of brilliance this season.

Lucas Digne – From Paris Saint-Germain for 16.5 Million Euros

Lucas Digne was bought from Paris-Saint Germain for a transfer fee of 16.5 million euros. The French left-back got lots of minutes early on as Jordi Alba suffered a hamstring injury. He seemed a bit nervous at times but proved to be good back-up for Alba. He made 16 appearances in the starting eleven across all competitions.

Paco Alcacer – From Valencia for 30 Million Euros

The second most expensive of Barcelona’s summer signings was Paco Alcácer who made the switch for 30 million euro. Since the front three for Barcelona were set he started only 8 matches and was often used as a substitute for Luis Suárez.

Jasper Cillessen – From Ajax for 13 Million Euros

Barcelona chose Marc-André Ter-Stegen as their main goalkeeper and sold Claudio Bravo to Manchester City. As a consequence Jasper Cillessen was signed as a backup for Ter-Stegen. The Dutch was bought from Ajax Amsterdam for a fee of 13 million euro.
